The Lotto Receivers’ Union (L.R.U.) was founded in 1947 by Joseph Rossi, with the aim of protecting the interests of the Lotto Receivers since, at that time, there were no relevant laws and regulations.
The Public Lotto in Malta was launched, in 1922, with the first draw being held at Floriana in February 1923. Thereafter a specific Public Lotto Department was formed, in order to control gaming in Malta. This setup continued until 1999.
In 2002 the Government decided to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP), in order to privatize the gaming industry, whilst retaining ownership and control. Maltco Lotteries won the tender and, following crucial and intensive discussions with the L.R.U., an agreement was reached and Maltco Lotteries commenced operations in 2004. The term of this agreement was for eight years.
In 2012 the Government issued another RFP and Maltco Lotteries was again given another tender for 10 years, till 4thJuly, 2022.
In 2022, another RFP was issued which this time, the tender was awarded to a Maltese company. National Lottery plc, will be operating the National Lotteries for the next 10 years.
The Lotto Receivers’ Union has been in discussions with National Lottery plc with a view to making the coming 10 years a success story.
